What are Cardinal Directions?

In school, particularly classroom presentations, students learn about the basic concept of Cardinal directions. It is very essential to learn because there are many future instances where you can utilize this knowledge. Broadly, cardinal directions are the four main compass directions i.e. East, West, North, and South. Commonly, people do not bother to use full words for these navigations. Rather, they choose their initials i.e. N, S, E, W.

The two terminologies i.e. clockwise and anti-clockwise determine the angles of these directions. Both of these describe the dimension of rotation. Clockwise motion proceeds in the same direction as a clock’s hands: from the top to the right, then down and then to the left, and back up to the top.

The opposite sense of rotation or revolution to this one is the anti-clockwise direction. Relative to the north, the directions east, south, and west are at 90-degree intervals in the clockwise direction. Apart from the cardinal, there are intercardinal directions as well that includes northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW).

Now when you know enough about the cardinal directions, let’s move on to the main topic i.e. their meaning in the Hindi language.

National Geographic Society

The Physical Geography Encyclopedic explains in detail the regions that are all around the world according to these four dimensions. It states some straight facts and general information about these navigations. For instance, the world’s largest river i.e. Amazon is in the northern portion of South America.

The largest rivers of Asia feed ice and snow glaciers to cover themselves. South America has three physical regions including highlands, river basins, and coastal plains.

According to Encyclopedic Entry, Asia has five major physical regions including mountain systems, plateaus, plains, steppes, deserts, freshwater environment, and saltwater environment. In the continent of Asia, the plateau is not uniformly flat but contains some high mountains and low river basins. Watershed in some specific areas of land shed water to an extent that it constitutes an entire river system.

There is no preferred format to how you can list these regions in terms of directions. Satellites are launching mostly near the equator towards the East direction because they will gather an initial boost equal to the velocity of Earth’s surface.

What do East, West, North, and South mean in Hindi?

To know the meaning of these cardinal directions in Hindi, you should first know what this language group is. Hindi, or more precisely Modern Standard Hindi, is an Indo-Aryan language that natives of Northern India speak. It has been described as a standardized and Sanskritised register of the Hindustani language, which itself is based primarily on the Khariboli dialect of Delhi and neighboring areas of Northern India.

Hindi is the official language of India and a co-official language of Pakistan. As Cardinal directions are North, East, South, and West, they have alternative meanings in Hindi as well. The economic development, flat grassland, and evergreen trees go side by side in India to maintain its natural resources.

Hindi belt, a region common to all four dimensions has a higher average elevation at 6,096, meters. Let’s take a look at each of these cardinal directions one by one!

North (N)

North is one of the four compass points or cardinal directions. It is the opposite of the south and is perpendicular to the East and West. North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. In the Hindi language, people say North as ‘Uttar’ and in the writing system, it is written as उत्तर. The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ‘ner’ which means “left; below” as north is to left when facing the rising sun.

Similarly, other cardinal directions also change according to the Sun’s position. Other languages have other derivations. You should also know about the role of the North as a prime directive to gather potential information about this dimension.  The Northern Dimension (ND) policy refers to practical cooperation between the European Union, Russia, Norway, and Iceland, initiated by Finland.

South (S)

South is also one of the cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of the north and is perpendicular to the east and west. The word south comes from Old English sūþ, from earlier Proto-Germanic ‘sunþaz’ (“south”), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root. Some languages describe the south in the same way, from the fact that it is the direction of the sun at noon (in the Northern Hemisphere).

Amazon River is in the South of Brazil. Among classroom resources, there is a classroom map on which all the directions are written clearly and comprehensively for the feasibility of the students. It is attached to the classroom walls. In Hindi, people call the South ‘Dakshin’. It is written as दक्षिण.

East (E)

East or Orient is another cardinal direction. It is in the opposite direction from the West. As in other languages, the word is formed from the fact that east is the direction where the sun rises: east comes from Middle English ‘est’, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic to Proto-European languages. By convention, the right-hand side of a map is East.

This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top. However, on maps of planets such as Venus and Uranus which rotate retrograde, the left-hand side is East. To go East using a compass for navigation, one sets a bearing or azimuth of 90°. In the Hindi language, this cardinal direction means ‘Poorv’. Its written form is पूरब.

West (W)

West or Occident is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from East and is the direction in which the sunsets. The word “west” is a Germanic word passed into some Romance languages. As in other languages, the word-formation stems from the fact that west is the direction of the setting sun in the evening: ‘west’ derives from the Indo-European root. In the Hindi language, the navigation West means ‘Paschim’. It is written as पश्चिम.
